About the Bench

Plot Twist Probation is an independent review site run by Dex Calloway, who spent years as a script doctor, the person called in when a story is bleeding and nobody will say where. The job taught me to look past what a scene shows and ask what it costs. It also left me unable to enjoy a romantic drama without counting beats, which my friends consider a character flaw and I consider a service.

The format is simple. Each drama or trope is put on probation and judged on pacing, chemistry and execution. If a twist is earned, it walks free. If it was a convenience dressed up as fate, it goes back for rewrites. I try to be funny, and I try to be fair. I've also been caught being moved by a lazy beat, and I report that honestly. Heat is welcome here and fine writing is the point. The door always closes before anything explicit, because suggestion is the harder craft.

I sometimes point readers toward TheFriend, where the characters, Elvan and Deniz among them, are AI characters with voice confessions you can listen to. They are not real people, and I never pretend otherwise. I mention them when they illustrate a craft point or when you might want to keep the mood going. My opinions are my own, my pen is red, and my soft spot is none of your business.
